Pitmedden Gardens

Pitmedden Gardens, situated in the Aberdeenshire countryside, dates to 1675. Owned and designed by Sir Alexander Seton and his head gardener, Seton’s main inspiration was the French Palace of Versailles. Sir Seton was a retired Court of Session judge during the rein of James II (James VII in Scotland). The house and garden stayed in the family name until the Second World War when the garden was ploughed and used as a vegetable and kitchen garden for the surrounding village. It wasn’t until the 1950s that the Scottish Trust gained ownership of the house and garden. During the restoration of the gardens, the Trust decided to use the 17th century plans to refurbish the gardens to their former glory.
